FIVE-O App in sync with findings from President Obama’s task force on 21st century policing; reiterates need for building trust and nurturing legitimacy between citizens and police
On December, 2014, President Obama announced the creation of a Task Force on 21st Century Policing to develop specific recommendations to improve law enforcement and community relations while ensuring public safety.
President Obama stated, “When any part of the American family does not feel like it is being treated fairly, that’s a problem for all of us,” said the President. “It’s not just a problem for some. It’s not just a problem for a particular community or a particular demographic. It means that we are not as strong as a country as we can be.”
The Pinetart Inc. team of Ima, Asha and Caleb Christian, like so many citizens in affected communities throughout the US and in fact, throughout the world lived some less than positive experiences with local police departments and hoped to create a solution that would help to highlight good and bad examples of policing and provide the data necessary for community activists, police departments, media, citizens and other stakeholders, to use in order to help to improve community-police relations throughout the United States.
One of the main pillars of the task force’s report is building trust and nurturing legitimacy on both sides of the police/citizen divide and the Pinetart Inc. team hopes that the data collected from users of their app will help to identify both examples of good policing and opportunities for improving police departments in need of review and change.
In is important to note that years of past research indicates that people are more likely to obey the law when they are treated with dignity and respect, when they are allowed ‘voice’ during encounters, when police are perceived to be neutral and transparent in decision making and when police are perceived to have trustworthy motives, so any solutions crafted in this space must be underpinned by the pillars of respect and fairness.
The FIVE-O app is a gigantic leap towards accomplishing the goal of helping to build trust between police and communities. All citizens to download the FIVE-O app and share their good and bad experiences with their local police departments. The first step towards solution is understanding and highlighting the scope of the problem or indeed helping to highlight how good departments police in order to have them serve as models for those departments with poor reputations.
